IMPORTANT DATES AND EVENTS

Torbay School Learning Powers – RIC

PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE

The end of term one has arrived and as I look back at the term, I am grateful for the work our staff put in every day of the week providing our children with a high quality, engaging programme that sees the vast majority of our Tamariki wanting to come to school every day of the week. In a term that has seen the implementation of significant change, requiring a great deal of effort from all staff, Torbay School has delivered a great programme embracing the changes yet holding on to all that makes Torbay a special place.

Our two Staff only days held early in the year focused on Literacy and Numeracy and has set the scene as we embrace the new curriculum, enhance our classroom practice and look to build on our already well-established programmes. We are continuing this work as the year progresses with our external facilitators working in our classrooms modelling teaching practice and observing our teachers in action.

We have completed our first two outdoor education camps with Whānau Rakino and Waiheke holding very successful camps in Term 1. Thankyou to all those parents who supported the camps by volunteering to transport children and to stay overnight. The camps are not possible without this support. Also a big shout out to our staff who give up a great deal of their personal time not only by attending the camps but also in the planning stages.

Our first ever Lunar New Year celebration week was a wonderful success with the children being involved in a range of activities related to this annual celebration. Certainly, one of the highlights appeared to be that every child made dumplings, this brought smiles to many faces. I would like to thank the many parents that came into the school to help with the activities and would especially like to then Mrs Ye and Mrs Hohaia Gibbons for their work in organising the weeks activities.

In the week following this celebration the school had a visit from the Education Review Office team. The ERO team spent two days at school observing teachers, interviewing staff and children and talking to the board. The feedback from the team at the end of the review was very positive and we await the final written report.

The term ended well with our traditional end of term mufti day and the PTA sausage sizzle. Thankyou to the PTA for their continued hard work to raise funds for the school and help develop the terrific community spirit we are fortunate to have.

Staff Only Day

As we move into Term 2 I remind you that we will be holding a staff only day on Friday, May 23rd. I thankyou for making alternative arrangements for the care of your children on this day.

New Sports Uniform

Our new sports tops are now available at the NZ Uniforms shop in Rosedale. It is not compulsory to be wearing the new shirts this year and so we will see some of our teams representing us wearing both the old and the new shirts as we transition into our new sports uniform.
