Torbay School Learning Powers – RIC
PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE
Tēnā koutou katoa
The cold flu season has certainly arrived as we have seen our absentee rate climb this week both with students and staff. It is clear that parents are keeping children home when they are showing any symptoms at all and I applaud and thank you for taking this action, we will all benefit from it and hopefully stay healthy.
Our staff celebrated yesterday afternoon and held a baby shower for Kylie Wilson (Room 13) who will be taking maternity leave from the beginning of week 3 next term. We wish Kylie and her husband all the very best for the arrival of their second child.
Kylie will be replaced by Vicki Crossman who is currently working alongside Susan Ye in Room 11. Vicki will work with Melissa Craig and she will teach room 13 for the remainder of the year. Paulette Noone who has also been working with our year 1 team will move into Room 12 and take responsibility for that class for term 3 and 4.
I am pleased to announce the appointment of two new teachers. John Blackburn will join our staff in week 3 and will work in our new entrant rooms as we build another class during term 3. Graham Eales will join us in week 5 and will take over Paulette Noone’s role providing release for teachers throughout the school.
I know you will all join me in welcoming Graham and John to our staff.
This morning I had reports of road rage displayed by some of our school community at the drop off zone. This is unfortunate to hear, please remember to be good role models for your children.
As we move towards the end of the term I want to thank you all for your support through challenging times. It has been a long period of sustained effort for children, parents and staff, requiring flexibility, adaptability and resilience.
I would like to make a special shout out to our staff who have adapted quickly and skillfully to meet a range of challenges and I know they are all looking forward to a well-earned break in July.
Please do not hesitate to contact me on any matter. My email address is gobrien@torbay.school.nz

MATARIKI – Matariki is a cluster of stars that can usually be seen in June or July heralding the start of a new year. Matariki comes from the phrase ‘Ngā Mata o Te Ariki Tāwhirimātea’, the eyes of the god Tāwhirimātea (God of Winds). According to the pūrakau (story), when Ranginui, the sky father, and Papatūānuku, the earth mother, were separated by their son Tānemāhuta, Tāwhirimātea, was the only child that disagreed. He fought with his brother Tūmatauenga, the God of War and Humanity and the only sibling willing to fight him. Tāwhirimātea was defeated by Tūmatauenga and became so angry that he tore out his eyes and threw them into the heavens.
There are nine stars in the Matariki cluster. Each star holds a certain significance over our wellbeing and environment, as seen from the Māori view of the world. Traditionally, Matariki was a time to remember those who have passed away. Matariki was also a time for singing, dancing and feasting as crops had been harvested and seafood and birds had been collected and there was plenty of food in the storehouses.
This year the best time to view Matariki and to celebrate it is from the 13th to the 16th of July.

we call you know it is the School calling rather than unknown caller.
